Josephine blinked. It only took a split second for her eyes to light up, joy filling them to the

brim.

She nodded quickly before enveloping him in a bone-crushing hug.

A muffled groan arose in response, and she released him immediately. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.

She must have aggravated his incision site on accident.

Her excitement about the upcoming hot air balloon ride had completely made her overlook the fact that he’d just had surgery.

Lewis pressed his arm against his abdomen, but it didn’t take long before he regained his composure.

He pulled her into his embrace and forced a smile. “It’s okay. I’m fine.”

Josephine stared at him in confusion. He didn’t seem fine at all.

After a while, she signed, “I think we should go back to the hospital. I don’t want to go on the hot air balloon anymore.”

Lewis’ eyes glistened as he cupped her face with one hand. “Why not?”

“I just don’t want to. My stomach doesn’t feel well.”

Lewis scrutinized her closely, trying to ascertain whether or not she was lying.

Josephine did not back down either. She wished he would stop forcing himself for her sake.

Before he could reply, his phone rang. It was Seth.

Lewis was just about to end the call when he hesitated, his finger hovering above the call

button.

Eventually, he accepted the call and placed his phone to his ear. “What?”

Seth’s voice reached him promptly. “Conrad’s afraid that you’d die out there. He even called me to ask if I’d seen you. Where are you?”

Lewis’ brows furrowed in annoyance. “Mind your own business.”

“Do you think I love meddling in your affairs? You can die wherever you want, whenever you please, but you better bring Josephine back before you do.”

Lewis laughed coldly. “And why would I do that?”

Seth sighed. A moment’s silence passed before he spoke. “Because she should get to pay her

respects to her ancestors.”

His words have lost their previous lightness, their weight apparent even through the phone.

Unexpectedly, Lewis did not retort. His gaze shifted to her direction, but she did not respond, entirely oblivious to their conversation.

“Don’t just think about yourself all the time, Lewis. Bring her back. At the very least, she should be able to connect with her ancestry and heritage before it’s too late. Before she-you. know-dies-”

“Shut your bloody ass mouth, Seth!” Lewis bellowed so abruptly that even Seth was startled. ” If you speak of such nonsense again, I’ll never let you see her!”

Even with his shock, Seth recovered his composure swiftly enough. “I’m speaking nonsense? Who do you think caused this mess in the first place? What’s the point of you bringing her to all these places, huh? Would she even remember this, years down the line? Are you trying to fulfill her wishes or assuage your own guilt?”

He paused for a breath before continuing, “I’m done trying to talk sense into you. Just bring her back here now, or else I’m sending someone down to get her myself.”

The call ended after his resounding threat.

Lewis glanced at the phone and then at Josephine.

The latter was so unsuspecting, so unaware of the situation they were both in. She gestured in anticipation, “Are we going back now?”

Lewis fell silent, observing the hot air balloons that were faintly visible in the distance. “Are you sure you really don’t want to go?”

Josephine nodded resolutely. “I don’t. Let’s go back.”

Lewis massaged his temples before sighing. “Fine. Whatever you want.”

True to his word, when they finally arrived at their destination, Lewis simply took her hand as she gazed at the slowly ascending hot air balloons without boarding one. Upon beholding the colorful balloons floating midair, a spark of admiration crossed her face. The sight itself was spectacular. Josephine couldn’t help but wonder what it would feel like to board one.

What would it feel like to fly?

She was seized by the incessant fantasies that tugged at her heartstrings as she daydreamed, allowing the wondrous visions to fill her mind. Then, she tugged at Lewis’ hand and indicated

that it was time to leave.

Lewis, to his credit, did not insist on staying any further. He guided her over to the cable car once more and returned to the original station where they first boarded the ride.

After leaving the scenic areas, Lewis drove her out of Ecstasia.

Josephine’s eyes strayed to the persistent pallor on his face, not regretting her decision one bit. It was a pity they hadn’t gotten to go on a hot air balloon, but it didn’t matter. They had time to revisit Ecstasia when Lewis was feeling better.

When that time came, she was determined to go on every ride and attraction Ecstasia had to offer with Lewis by her side.

A faint smile tugged at the corner of her lips at the thought of spending more time together with him.

Lewis drove steadily, but he did not bring them back to the hospital. Eventually, they found themselves at an abandoned villa, where she was asked to leave the car and stand amid the overgrown grass that seemed on the verge of engulfing her.

The dilapidated building loomed before her, tendrils of fear taking residence in her heart.

She gripped Lewis’ hand tightly, unsure why he had brought her here.

Before she could ask, a black Bentley approached them swiftly before abruptly stopping beside them.

The door opened, and Seth alighted from within.

Even though it was New Year’s Day, he was still clad in that ever-present suit of his, his wavy hair curling slightly by his ear. The resounding image he projected was an ambiguous one, stirring a deep sense of uncertainty within whoever laid their eyes upon him.

He stopped in front of the pair and gave Josephine a once-over.

“I asked the doctor about her condition. Is her memory deteriorating very quickly?”

Lewis did not speak, but he did not deny Seth’s proclamation either.

Seth chuckled. “Alright. Get in the car.”

Josephine did not know who this man was, and she was less inclined to go with him as time. passed. Her grip on Lewis’ arms tightened as she attempted to ask him when he planned on returning to the hospital.

All she was concerned about now was his health.

Lewis rubbed her forearm reassuringly as he helped her onto the car.

As Seth drove in front, the two of them sat at the back, watching as the car left the desolate landscape and returned to the bustling city center. Many were out and about today, crowds. gathering on every corner of the city. Even the traffic on the road was severely congested, considering the occasion.

Josephine found herself seized by the currents of her carsickness, waves of nausea rolling in her gut.

Lewis rolled down the windows at the back, hoping she would feel better with the improved ventilation in the car. With the windows open, Josephine turned to look at the amassed throngs filtering through the streets, her gaze distant.

The longer she spent in the car, the more nauseous she got. At one point, she could no longer stand her discomfort and raised her arms to cover her mouth before retching uncontrollably behind her palms.

Lewis turned and handed her a paper bag. “If you feel like throwing up, do it in here.”

Josephine nodded. She did feel like throwing up, though her inability to cause her more

discomfort than ever.

She hugged the paper bag to her chest and leaned against the window. Eventually, she found herself drifting into an uncomfortable sleep.

Lewis, on the other hand, was deeply irritated by the traffic jam outside. He lit a cigarette and began smoking leisurely, keeping the window on his side open.

After more than two hours, they left the stretch of congested road behind and turned into a remote suburb.

Seth eased the car to a halt and lit his own cigarette, waiting for Lewis to alight.

As for Josephine, the first thing she did as she got out of the car was throw up in a nearby bush.

Seth watched her for a while before opening his mouth to speak. “Is she pregnant? Did you. check?”

Lewis peered at him indifferently. “You’re thinking too much into this.”

Seth chortled. “Better this than the alternative. She’ll be the one to suffer anyway if the contrary proves to be true.”

Josephine turned back to the two after finishing up her business.

The two men seemed to be engaged in some kind of conflict, though she had no idea why.

Seth surveyed her carefully, a smirk on his lips. His voice was cold when he added, “Speaking of which, she did it twice in the past. She shouldn’t be able to get pregnant anymore.” “Did what twice?” Lewis asked sharply.
