Chapter 311
Chapter 0311
Mabel Fritz was extremely pissed off. As she sat next to Dylan and across from Logan and I at that same café table, she glared at each of us, one after the next. Her face was scrunched, her eyes blazing
“How the hell could you make a move like this and not alert me, your public relations manager?” she snapped. “I want to help you, and you keep me out of the goddamn loop!” She smacked the table with her open palm, rattling our coffee cups in their saucers.
Dylan winced.
“I’m really sorry,” I said. “We weren’t thinking.” NôvelDrama.Org: text © owner.
“No, you clearly weren’t.” Resting her elbows on the table, she lifted her hands up and massaged her temples. “You all understand what a PR rep does, right?”
“Won’t happen again,” Dylan said. “Sorry Mabel.”
“It’s fine, it’s just…” She let out a long sigh and lowered her hands. Just like that, she returned to her usual calm demeanor. “You are making my job more difficult And I’m not even being paid.”
“Sorry,” Dylan said again. “I’ll buy you that wine you like!
Mabel glanced at him, considering. “The good stuff?”
“Would buy you something cheap?”
“Six bottles,” she said.
Dylan nodded. “You got it.”
“Alright.” With another breath, she looked back to Logan and me. “Fortunately, this step has done more good than harm. You’ve got thousands of fresh eyes questioning Mr. Hatfield Senior and his motives. The only problem with this tactic is public interest fades quickly. We need to keep striking while the iron is hot.”
“What do you suggest?” Logan asked.
“If we keep the controversy brewing, we will maintain that public interest,” Mabel said. “That means, we need to keep stirring up trouble. The website helps. You need to get me in touch with the owners, by the way. I can help them with what to post.”
“I can do that,” I said.
“Good,” Mabel said. “But stories of the past won’t be enough on their own. We also need to cook up some trouble in the present.” She smiled like she had something in mind. Pointing at Logan and me, she said, We need to have the two of you being spotted together and in love.”
Logan looked at me.
“God, with the way those two make doe eyes at each other all the time, it would be difficult for them, Dylan said. Where once he might have been annoyed or disgusted by those words, now however, he seems totally fine with it..
I hoped that whatever desire he had for a relationship with me, he had quashed. I truly just wanted to be

friends. Finally, it seemed like he wanted the same.
“Good. That’s good,” Mabel said. “There’s one last thing that would help keep the buzz going. Something that will have people whispering and turn the focus onto you two.”
“What’s that?” I asked.
Mabel smiled. “You have to start wearing your wedding rings.”
Oh. I remembered the heirloom ring with the large diamond that Logan had given to me. All this time, with our relationship secret, I’d been keeping it secret. It was tucked away in the very back of my sock drawer, In my apartment in Russford.
“That might be difficult,” I said. “My ring is back in Russford.”
“Then we’ll go get it,” Logan said. He placed his hand over mine on the table. Tve been waiting a long time to see that ring on your finger. I can wait another day, but then never again. You have to wear it for life.”
Looking at him, I could see the affection in his gaze. A smile spread across my lips in response, ” promise.”
Mabel cleared her throat. “What about you. Logan? Do you have a ring to wear?”
Logan paused. “No,” he said.
I pressed my lips hard together for a moment, then spoke up. “Our relationship has had its ups and downs. Mostly, we’ve kept it secret. We never bought a ring for Logan…”
Mabel hummed. “Isn’t it about time?”
“Past due, I think,” Dylan added.
Logan’s eyes back on me, he asked, “What do you think Hazel? Are you up for some ring shopping?”
My heart thundered in my chest. If Logan wore a ring our relationship really would be out in the open. He’d stop hiding me and our relationship, just like he had promised
“I’d love to,” I told him, meaning it with all of my heart
An hour later, we stood in the jewelry store, peering down the glass cases, looking at silver and golden bands. All of which were extremely out of my price range
After having sticker shock for the third time in a row, I started to wonder if this wasn’t such a good idea after all. Logan deserved a ring as high class as he was, but I didn’t have a hope’s prayer of affording it.
“I can pay for it,” Logan said, likely recognizing my panic from the look on my face.
1 want to be able to give you something” I said.
“Hazel” Logan said
To my surprise, he wrapped his arms around my waist right there in the middle of the store and urged me to turn to him. When I did he leaned down and pressed his lips to mine in a gentle kiss. Closing my eyes, I relaxed against him, letting my worry slip away
“You have already given me something You. The best something I could ever possess,” he said. “You gift
me that something every day by staying by my side.”
7 “I want you to know how special you are to me…” I said, though my arguments were becoming less impassioned with each passing moment. He was incredibly convincing like this. I probably would have agreed with anything he had to say, when he looked at me like I was the center of his whole world.
“I already know, Hazel,” Logan said. “The ring is just a symbol.”
“Still”
He tilted his head, looking at me. “It doesn’t have to be one of these,” he said. “If it would make you feel better to pay for it, we can look at different ones.”
“These are the ones you like…”
Gently, she shook his head. “I like whatever you give me. We could use a bread tle, and it would be just as special.”
The thought of Logan with a bread tie twisted around his ring finger made me laugh, which further removed some of the pressure inside of me. “I don’t think we have to go quite that far,”
“Over here then,” he said. Letting me go, he laced his fingers with mine instead and led me to the other side of the store, where the jewelry was still nice, just simpler.
There, a simple, single band ring caught my eye. His too, I realized, when he pointed at it.
“What about that one?” he asked me.
“I like it,” I said. “Do you like it?”
“It’s perfect.”
We called for the salesperson, who retrieved the ring from the counter for Logan to try on. As luck would have it, the ring was a perfect fit, as if it was made just for Logan. It didn’t need sized at all.
The price tag was hefty, but didn’t give me sticker shock this time. I could afford this.
Which left us both happy.
As the salesman processed the sale, Logan wrapped his arms around me once more. This time, I pressed up onto my tiptoes to initiate the kiss.
Just as I did, I heard the shutter click of a camera.
