PEACEFUL
“Nolan.. ” Darren called as she approached Nolan who was sitting on one of the chairs near Layla’s room.
” I think you should go back to the palace… ” Darren suggested, as Nolan had not stepped foot out of the hospital since Layla was brought in. She was still in a coma.
“And a nanny has been assigned to take care of the baby..” he added as Nolan shook his head slowly.
Nolan hadn’t even had the time to have a look at his son. As he was worried about Layla.
Nolan was so conflicted. He wanted to be by Layla’s side, but he also felt an urgent need to hold his son. It was as if his heart was being pulled in two different directions. He knew that Layla would want him to spend time with their baby, but he couldn’t bear the thought of leaving her alone.
“And you should be with Noelle also..” Darren continued as it seemed like Nolan had no plans of wanting to leave.
“She’s been crying nonstop. I heard from Keisha that she had refused to eat her meals and locked herself up..” he informed and that seemed to have sparked a reaction in Nolan as he looked up.
“I’ll leave for a few hours. Call me if anything comes up..” Nolan said standing up from his feet.
He had a passive look on his face as he walked away the next minute.
He should be there for Noelle.
…. ..
Nolan arrived home as he walked briskly to Noelle’s room.
It seemed like she was asleep, so he silently sat on the bed beside her, and he placed his hand on her hair, stroking it gently.
“I’m so sorry, sweetheart,” he said softly. “I know this is really hard for you.” He muttered softly to not wake her up.
As Nolan stroked Noelle’s hair, she started to stir. She opened her eyes slowly, and when she saw him, she sat up and threw her arms around him, hugging him tightly.
“Daddy!” she cried, her voice muffled by his shirt.
“Where’s my mommy..” she sniffled as Nolan hugged her very tightly.
“She’ll be here soon..” he replied.
” I really miss mommy.. ” she cried.
” I know dear.. ” he said, planting a kiss on her forehead.Belonging © NôvelDram/a.Org.
Noelle’s sobs eventually subsided, and she looked up at her father, her eyes red and puffy
.
“Why did this happen?” she asked, her voice small and vulnerable. “Why did Mommy have to be in the hospital and I hate that bad woman..” she mumbled resting her head on her father’s chest.
Nolan took a deep breath, not quite sure how to answer that question.
“Sometimes bad things just happen,” he said gently. “It’s not fair, and it’s not easy to understand, but we just have to try to be strong and help each other through it.”
Noelle nodded, her lower lip trembling. “Can you stay with me tonight?” she asked, not wanting to be alone anymore.
” Sure, sweetie. But first, I’ll make you something to eat. I learned that you haven’t been taking your meals. Why? ” He demanded softly, not sounding angry.
Noelle hesitated, not wanting to answer. But she knew her father would keep asking until she told him.
“I just… I don’t feel like eating,” she mumbled. “Everything tastes funny without Mommy here.”
“Oh, honey,” Nolan said, his heart breaking at her words.
“It’s okay if things don’t taste the same. But you need to eat so you can be strong for your mommy when she gets better.”
Noelle nodded, still not looking convinced. “Do you promise you won’t leave me if I eat?” she asked.
” I promise my love”
Noelle looked up at her father, her eyes still red and puffy from crying. “Okay, Daddy,” she said, her voice small. “I’ll eat.”
Nolan smiled and squeezed her hand. “Good girl,” he said. “I’ll make you your favorite, spaghetti and meatballs.”
Noelle’s eyes lit up a bit at the mention of her favorite food. “With extra Parmesan?” she asked.
“Of course,” he said with a chuckle. “And garlic bread.”
Noelle’s face brightened a little more. “Thank you, Daddy,” she said, giving him another hug as he carried her up from the bed and headed straight to the kitchen.
……
Noelle was in the hospital room, seated beside Layla’s bed as he held her mother’s hand tightly. Malcolm was also with her.
It’s been over a month and Layla still hadn’t shown any sign of waking up here, the only thing they could do was pray to the moon goddess.
The room was silent except for the sound of the machines monitoring Layla’s vital signs. The steady beeping of the heart monitor was almost comforting in its regularity. Malcolm stood on the other side of the bed, his eyes fixed on Layla’s face. His expression was somber, but there was a hint of hope in his eyes. Noelle sat in the chair next to the bed, her small hand clutching her mother’s.
“Mommy, please wake up…. ” She muttered climbing down from the chair as she made her way to move the blanket that was covering Layla a little higher.
Noelle had made it her duty to take care of her mother.
” I really miss you..” she poured sitting back on the chair as she stared at Layla’s pretty face.
Layla was still very beautiful even in her unconscious state, she looked peaceful as if she was simply sleeping. Noelle leaned forward and placed a kiss on her mother’s forehead. “Please wake up, Mommy,” she whispered. “I need you.”
” Noah needs you also.. ” she added. Noah was her baby brother who was just a month old.
Layla had given birth to Noah just after she was shot, and it was a miracle that he survived as he had to be brought out of her in her unconscious state.
. He was a healthy baby, but he would never know his mother if she didn’t wake up. The thought made Noelle’s heart ache. She looked up at Malcolm, her eyes pleading.
“I think we should get going Noelle. Aunt Keisha said to arrive soon. Tomorrow we have to go to school… ” Malcolm informed Noelle and she frowned. She did not want to leave her mother.
“Okay… ” she reluctantly agreed as Nolan had told her to quit acting stubborn.
She climbed down from the chair and was about to leave with Malcolm when her eyes caught something.
” Look, Malcolm. Mommy just moved her fingers!! ” Noelle pointed out as she screamed.
Malcolm’s head whipped around, and sure enough, Layla’s fingers were twitching ever so slightly. A spark of hope ignited in his heart.
“Noelle, you’re right!” he exclaimed. “She’s moving!”
Noelle’s eyes filled with tears of joy. “She’s waking up!” she said, her voice trembling. “She’s coming back to us!”
Malcolm took Noelle’s hand and they both stood over Layla, watching as her fingers continued to move. Then, slowly, her eyes began to flutter open.
“I’ll get the doctor, you wait here..” Malcolm announced as he dashed out from the hospital room excitedly.
