Chapter 166
For three years of their marriage, Everett came home to mostly fulfil his physical desires. Their conversations mostly happened in bed, and they never really had a genuine heart-to-heart like any ordinary couple. But now, the scene unfolding before her felt dreamlike, almost too good to be true. She never imagined Everett would one day notice her sour mood, let alone soothe her with such tenderness. Her eyes softened. "Okay, I understand." She accepted his kindness this time.
She agreed with Everett's point that overindulging someone could backfire. If Claire acted out more recklessly, it would only lead to more harm, bringing even more distress to Brook and Ricky. It was better to seize this moment for some serious introspection. "Selena, do you know how much I earn in a minute?" Everett asked suddenly.
Caught off guard, Selena instinctively replied, "How much?"
Everett threw out a ridiculously high number with a smug grin.
"...So what?" Selena asked, puzzled by his sudden boast. Was he just flaunting his wealth?
"I just spent ten minutes helping you out, which means I've effectively spent ten times that amount on you. How would you like to pay-PayPal or Apple Pay?" he said, taking his time. Then, with a playful touch, he added, "Since we're married, I can give you a 20% discount. Now, pay up."
Selena was speechless. For a moment, she thought he had changed, but it turned out he was still the same cutthroat capitalist, merciless as ever.
She was flat broke, with not a penny to her name. Even if she sold everything she had, it wouldn't cover the amount he mentioned.
"Everett, I didn't ask you for help. You did that on your own. You can't just charge me for it! And I won't pay!" Selena shot back, making her case.
"Hmm." Everett seemed to have expected her response. He lounged leisurely as he replied, "Didn't you say yesterday that you don't like taking advantage of others and that we should settle debts promptly?" Selena found herself at a loss for words.
"It's important to keep your word. Backtracking is quite unbecoming. As your husband, I feel it's my duty to correct these bad habits of yours to avoid tarnishing the Bennett family's reputation," he said, all righteous indignation. "Otherwise, I might have to get my lawyer involved."
Selena swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his words. The contract she signed with Everett did stipulate that she should uphold the Mrs. Bennett image, and if he pursued damages based on this, it could indeed spell trouble for her.
Dealing with such a sharp businessman was like navigating a minefield. With a sigh, she admitted, "I don't have that kind of money right now. Can I pay later? Once we're divorced, I'll settle up as soon as I get my share of the assets!Têxt © NôvelDrama.Org.
Everett chuckled lightly, "I don't accept IOUS. You're short on cash, and frankly, your credit's no good with me. However, I can propose a Plan B."
Suddenly, he clasped her wrist, pulling her gently against his chest. Her chest met his solid frame.
Everett's lips brushed her ear, his voice a low murmur, "A debt paid in kind..."
