“I didn’t mean Clifford, of course. He’s not the only man I’ve met in the last few years, Margaret said irritably, continuing her lie. She had no idea why insisted on telling Gideon that she had a boyfriend..

“Really?” Gideon replied dryly, his smile deepening as if he had just heard a joke.

“Yes!” Margaret snapped, refusing to back down. She could not think of a better alternative than to keep up her lie, even if it was flawed. She didn’t want to lose what little dignity she had left before Gideon.

Margaret refused to give Gideon satisfaction, especially when he was dangling himself in front of her and stirring up old memories even though he and Roxanne had been together for years and, more importantly, engaged.

“Perfect. I’d love to meet your boyfriend. Why don’t you have him come down and make the introductions? We had slept together once, you know. I’d like to know whether you found a good man,” Gideon quipped as he put his hands in his pockets. Content (C) Nôv/elDra/ma.Org.

Although Gideon knew Margaret had lied about having a boyfriend just to make him give up on her, the mere mention of another man- albeit an imaginary one–still pissed him off.

“My personal affairs are not your concern, Mr. Compton,” Margaret said politely. She nodded courteously as she walked past him to go home. She tried to think of reasons to put on her job transfer slip that would get her out of the city as soon as possible.

At that moment, Gideon grabbed her arm firmly, and d she struggled to break free from his grip but failed

“It’s time for v

you to come back, Margaret. You’ve been away too long,” he said as he took her in his arms.

Margaret was shoved into the backseat of Gideon’s car before she could fully process her anger and shock. He promptly locked the door,

leaving her with no means of escape.

“This is kidnapping!” she yelled.

“So call the police,” he said nonchalantly and started the car

Margaret remained silent throughout the drive. However, unbeknownst to her, Gideon found her sullen attitude endearing that he almost parked the car and took her right there in the backseat.

Gideon had not been resilient enough to remain celibate for her sake during the five years Margaret had been gone.

He wasn’t sure how many women he had slept with, but he couldn’t imagine staying with any of them. He couldn’t help comparing them to Margaret, either. In the end, he still preferred her company to any other woman’s.

He knew it was not the right time to make a move on her, considering the chemistry they once shared. He would take his time playing the

game.

Half an hour later, they pulled up in front of a restaurant.

Margaret looked up at the restaurant and decided not to get out of the car. She knew he had chosen that restaurant on purpose.

It was where he had celebrated her birthday four years ago, though that was the first and last time, for she had not been with him for long

back then.

The celebration hadn’t been romantic, either. There had been food, cake, music, and presents, but it had been the first time Margaret had ever celebrated her birthday. She wondered, ‘Is that when Gideon began to win me over?‘

Old memories seemed to haunt Margaret those days, but she did not want to remember any of those good times. It would only make her

sadder and give Gideon the satisfaction of winning.

“Get out.” Gideon said after circling the car to the passenger side and opening the door for Margaret.

He knew she was unhappy, but he was gentle to her now since he was in a better mood, rarely.

“No,” she refused stubbornly.

“Are you sure?” Gideon said, raising an eyebrow. Margaret tensed at the confidence and threat in his tone, wondering, ‘Is he going to…”
