Missing You
Her heart was beating rapidly after that phone call with Devlin. How did he know about her number? It has been years. And now, he reappears in her life? For what? Why would he even contact her in the first place? To take his revenge again just like what he did last time?
Five long freaking years. And here she is, still affected by him. How can she not move on from him?
It’s her fault anyway. She never entertained those men who showed interest in her. There is one who consistently has been asking her for a date. Jacob’s best friend, Elijah. However, she could not bring herself to go out with anyone. She tried going out with Elijah. But those were just friendly dinners for her with their friends who tagged along. She never sees Elijah on a romantic level.
After what happened with Devlin, she could not bring herself to trust any man in her life. Not even Elijah who always shows understanding and patience.
She almost forgot about him. Elijah would be there. Last time they had a conversation, he told her that he is willing to wait until she gives in to his wish for a date. Just a single date and see where it would lead them.
Tonight is Jillian’s small party with friends to celebrate her engagement with Jacob. They will have a grand engagement party later on and she will be invited, of course.
She was contemplating on accepting the invitation of Elijah this time. Just the two of them on a dinner date. However, it would be unfair to Elijah if she would go out with him just because Devlin is in town. She can’t be callous to use him. She is no different than Devlin himself. That’s what he did to her years ago and things got screwed up after that.
She tried hard to forget about the pain. She may have forgiven him but she could not forget. What difference does it make anyway? It is as good as not forgiving him at all. Every time she remembers that one single phrase from his mouth that night, she just could not stop herself from tearing up. It was very insulting.
When can she ever move on? It has been years… more than five years to be exact. And Devlin even gave her hope that they could get back together one day. That he is going to get her back. How?
For years, she held onto the pain. She looks confident and beautiful outside, but deep inside she is empty. Devlin ruined the chance for her to open her heart to someone else.
‘How can life be so unfair?!’ Maybe she should seek professional help. She must be acting not on the normal level.
She did not do anything during her day except to watch some shows or read her comfort books. She tried to forget about Devlin. She has a party to attend tonight.
Night came and Amber was getting ready to the party. Jillian called her earlier to ask if she was on her way. She even offered to send their family driver to pick her up but she refused. She can drive to the venue. Jacob owned a bar. He had it closed just for the party. She knows the place too well as she goes there from time to time with Jillian to unwind.
She looked at herself in the mirror and she was satisfied with her look. She arrived at the venue a little earlier but there were already a lot of guests. They were Jillian and Jacob’s families and friends. She almost knew everyone. She even took the limelight for a while. Everyone was congratulating her for her award. Now, a lot of them are showing their intention to be a part of her company. She politely diverted their talks as this was not the proper time and venue to discuss work. She came to celebrate with her lovely friend.
She is glad that Jillian came to the rescue. She immediately led her to her table with some of Jillian’s family member’s and friends. She knew all of them. She politely greeted each one of them.
“Thank you. I am glad you came. I don’t want to be rude to some of your guests.” She said frankly. Jillian only laughed at her.
“I don’t mind actually but I saw you getting uncomfortable from their presence.” Amber smiled widely at her good friend.
“Congratulations! I am so happy for you. You both deserve each other. By the way, I have something here for you.” Amber handed her gift to Jillian. It is a handbag from a high-end brand. Jillian gasped in surprise. She knows the price of the handbag.Copyright Nôv/el/Dra/ma.Org.
‘Oh…thank you so much. I never thought you would remember that I wanted this.” She exclaimed happily. Jillian likes to splurge on luxury items. Her status permits her to buy anything she wants.
“I got that in Paris. What a coincidence! Now, I have an early gift for your engagement party.” Jillian rolled her eyes at her.
“You still owe me for that one.” They both laughed at Jillian’s joke. They continued talking about how Jacob did his proposal. They were so engrossed in their talks that they did not realize that some of Jillian’s guests, the female ones, were swooning over someone.
Someone screamed with excitement that got both their attention. Amber followed who the woman was screaming at. It was too late for her to realize that Devlin was walking towards her spot. He was trailing behind Jacob but he never lost his eye contact with her. He was looking at her face intently.
“Hey!” Jacob kissed Jillian’s forehead. He lightly pulled his fiancee so he could introduce her to his business partner.
“Devlin, this is my fiancee, Jillian Smith.” Devlin politely nodded at her.
“Baby, he is my business partner that I mentioned to you from Seattle, Devlin Wesley.” Jillian smiled widely at Devlin. She extended her hand to greet him.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Wesley. Thanks for coming to our small party.” She said happily. She knows some things about the famous Devlin Wesley because of Jacob. But she never knew that her friend, Amber, was once connected with Devlin.
“And this beautiful lady here is my good friend, Amber… Amber Adams.” She introduced Amber to Devlin hoping that she could find her a date tonight. She giggled at the thought. She knows that Mr. Wesley is one of the most eligible bachelors in the country.
Amber feels uncomfortable but she tries her best to act accordingly in front of Jillian and everyone else here. She looked around and all eyes were on them. She does not want to make a scene. So, she extended her hand to greet Devlin, as if she never knew him.
Amber accepted his handshake with a smirk. He gripped her hand for a while despite her wanting to pull it away.
“A great pleasure to meet you, Ms. Adams.” He said and took the vacant spot next to her. Jacob sat down beside Jillian. The couple were talking for a while while Amber and Devlin were quiet. He was simply looking at her from his peripherals.
It did not take long for Jillian and Jacob to excuse themselves so they could take care of the other guests. Jillian gave her friend a teasing smile before she left with her fiance.
“This is indeed a small world. We keep bumping into each other. Might as well engage in some interesting talks?” He suggested with his winsome smile. Amber only rolled her eyes at him.
Why does she feel that he is enjoying her uneasiness?
“Smile, baby. Almost everyone is looking at us. They might think that I made you upset or something.” He taunted her more so she could start talking to him.
“I…AM…NOT…YOUR…BABY! She said each word like a venom in her mouth. Instead of intimidating Devlin, that only made him laugh. Now, everyone’s attention is on them. Amber saw some women whispering to each other.
‘Great! He really knows how to get the attention of everyone.’ She gritted her teeth.
“Could you stop laughing. There is nothing funny.” She hissed at him but smiled for everyone to see.
To others, it looks like they shared some funny jokes. Some guests are getting more curious about them.
“Relax, baby. The night is young. Just enjoy it.” He said while winking at her.
The nerve of this man to even talk casually like nothing happened between them five years ago. She really wanted to just leave the place. However, she just arrived. What would Jillian think?
She took a heavy sigh and pretended to smile at Devlin even if deep inside she just wanted to pour her glass of wine at his smiling face.
“You know, I bet with my life that every single woman here would want me to spend time with them. But I choose to be with you.” He enjoys taunting her. He misses his feisty lil minx. He really misses her. If she only knew…
